The Submariner is the most counterfeited luxury watch in the world. It's iconic, instantly recognizable, and commands $8,000-$40,000+ depending on the reference. Counterfeiters range from obvious $50 knockoffs to sophisticated 'super fakes' that cost $500-$1,000 to produce and can fool casual observers. The Rehaut Engraving (Post-2007)

Starting in 2007, Rolex engraved the serial number at the 6 o'clock position on the rehaut (the inner ring between the dial and crystal). The 'ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX' repeating text around the rest of the rehaut should be laser-engraved with microscopic precision. On fakes, this text is often too deep, unevenly spaced, or slightly blurry. Use a loupe — the letters should be crisp and consistent all the way around.

The Crystal Crown Etching

Since approximately 2002, Rolex etches a tiny crown logo at 6 o'clock on the crystal. It's nearly invisible to the naked eye and requires a loupe at a specific angle to see. The etching consists of dozens of tiny dots forming the crown shape. On fakes, this is often too visible (etched too deeply), has the wrong proportions, or is a solid outline rather than the dot pattern.

Bezel and Movement Details

Era-Specific Tells

Five-digit references (16610, 14060, etc., produced until ~2010) have aluminum bezels that fade over time — a genuine faded bezel on a 16610 from the 1990s should show natural, even color change. The tritium lume on pre-1998 models should have a warm cream or brown patina. Six-digit references (116610, 126610) have ceramic bezels that don't fade, Chromalight lume that glows blue, and maxi dials with larger indices. Mixing features from different eras — like a ceramic bezel on a 5-digit case — is an instant red flag.
