The Cartier Santos is the world's first purpose-built pilot's wristwatch, created in 1904 by Louis Cartier for his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian aviation pioneer who needed to check the time while flying without releasing the controls. Over 120 years later, the Santos remains one of Cartier's most important collections and one of the few luxury watches that genuinely wears as well with a suit as it does with a t-shirt. This guide compares model sizes and static guide ranges for buyers considering a pre-owned Santos.
Why the Santos Matters
The Santos isn't just historically significant — it's one of the most versatile luxury watches you can buy. The square case with exposed screws has become an icon of industrial design, and the 2018 redesign brought modern engineering without sacrificing the original DNA.
- The first dedicated pilot's wristwatch (1904) — predates the Tank by 13 years
- Redesigned in 2018 with QuickSwitch straps and SmartLink bracelet sizing
- 100m water resistance (Santos de Cartier) — genuinely suitable for daily wear
- Available in steel, two-tone, rose gold, and yellow gold

Santos Medium vs Large: Size Guide
This is the most common question Santos buyers ask. The square case shape means these watches wear differently than round watches of similar diameter — a 35mm Santos medium feels more like a 39-40mm round watch on the wrist.
| Spec | Medium (WSSA0029) | Large (WSSA0018) |
|---|---|---|
| Case Width | 35.1mm | 39.8mm |
| Case Length | 41.9mm | 47.5mm |
| Thickness | 8.83mm | 9.08mm |
| Best Wrist Size | 5.5" - 7.5" | 7" - 8.5" |
| Wears Like (Round) | ~39-40mm | ~43-44mm |
| Weight (Steel) | ~120g | ~145g |
| Retail (Steel) | $7,250 | $7,850 |
| Pre-Owned (Steel) | $3,500-$5,500 | $4,500-$6,500 |
most buyers — including men with average 7-inch wrists — are happiest with the medium. It sits flush against the wrist, slides under shirt cuffs, and looks proportional on almost any arm. The large makes a statement and works on bigger wrists, but it can overwhelm slender arms. If in doubt, go medium.
Santos-Dumont vs Santos de Cartier
Despite sharing a name, these are fundamentally different watches. Confusing them is the most common mistake Santos buyers make.
| Feature | Santos de Cartier | Santos-Dumont |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Automatic (1847 MC) | Quartz (Large) / Manual (XL) |
| Water Resistance | 100 meters | 30 meters (splash only) |
| Bracelet | Steel/gold bracelet included | Leather strap only |
| QuickSwitch | Yes — swap strap/bracelet in seconds | No |
| SmartLink | Yes — tool-free bracelet sizing | No (no bracelet) |
| Case Thickness | ~9mm | ~7mm (noticeably thinner) |
| Daily Wear | Excellent — robust and versatile | Dress watch — handle with care |
| Steel Retail | $7,250 (medium) |
QuickSwitch & SmartLink: Why They Matter
The 2018 Santos redesign introduced two features that changed how people wear the watch — and they're a key reason to buy the Santos de Cartier over the Dumont or older Santos 100.
- QuickSwitch
A small button on each lug releases the strap or bracelet instantly — no tools required. Swap from steel bracelet to leather strap in under 10 seconds. This means one Santos can serve as both a sport watch and a dress watch.
- SmartLink
The steel bracelet uses a push-button link removal system instead of traditional pins and screws. You can size the bracelet yourself at home without a jeweler. When buying pre-owned, this means the bracelet arrives ready to resize — no trip to a watchmaker.
- Why it matters for eBay buyers
Pre-owned Santos de Cartier models often come with both the bracelet and an extra strap. Check listings carefully — some sellers remove the bracelet to sell separately. A complete Santos with bracelet AND strap is worth $200-$400 more than bracelet-only.
Pre-Owned Market & Authentication Tips
The Santos is one of the most counterfeited Cartier watches after the Ballon Bleu. The 2018+ models are harder to fake convincingly because of the QuickSwitch mechanism, but older Santos 100 and Galbee fakes are common. Here's what to check:
Red Flags
- Bezel screws that are raised, uneven, or have wrong slot angles — authentic Santos screws are perfectly flush
- Blue hands that look painted rather than having depth — genuine blued steel has a distinctive sheen
- Crown without a proper sapphire cabochon — fakes use glass or plastic
- QuickSwitch buttons that feel flimsy or don't operate smoothly
- Price under $3,000 — treat this as an authenticity warning
Finding the Right Santos on eBay
Searching for a Cartier Santos on eBay returns thousands of results — watches, straps, buckles, boxes, and unrelated items all mixed together. General marketplace search tools don't understand watch categories, and most aggregator sites pull from multiple platforms without giving you eBay-specific filtering.
AuctionMapper is built specifically for eBay searches. Here's what that means for Santos buyers:
- Category-aware search
Search within eBay's Jewelry & Watches category (31387) to automatically exclude Santos-branded accessories, straps, spare parts, and unrelated items.
- Price range filtering
Set a minimum price of $2,500 to filter out obvious fakes, empty boxes, and "Cartier-style" watches. Adjust maximum to target your budget range.
- Distance sorting
Enter your ZIP code to sort by nearest sellers. Useful for finding authorized dealer overstock, estate sales, and local pickup opportunities.
- Purchasable listings
Search eBay inventory through AuctionMapper, including auctions ending soon.
- Targeted model search
Search "cartier santos medium steel" or "santos dumont" to find exactly the model and material you want, narrowing results to precise matches.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Cartier Santos cost?
Guide ranges run from $3,500-$5,500 for pre-owned medium steel Cartier Santos de Cartier watches to $8,000-$14,000 for large two-tone or gold versions. The Santos-Dumont guide range starts lower at $2,500-$4,000 pre-owned. New retail prices begin at $7,250 for the medium steel Santos de Cartier. Discontinued Santos 100 models have a $3,000-$6,000 guide range depending on size and condition.
Is the Cartier Santos a good investment?
The Cartier Santos de Cartier holds value well on the secondary market, typically retaining 55-75% of retail price. The steel medium model has the strongest resale due to high demand and reasonable entry price. Two-tone and gold versions retain value in dollar terms but lose a higher percentage of retail. The Santos is not a speculative watch like a Rolex Daytona, but it is one of the best value-retention Cartier models alongside the Tank.
Santos medium vs large — which size should I buy?
The Santos medium (35.1mm x 41.9mm) fits most wrists between 6 and 7.5 inches and wears like a typical 39-40mm round watch due to its square shape. The large (39.8mm x 47.5mm) suits wrists 7 inches and above and makes a bold statement. Most buyers — including men — choose the medium. The large works best on larger wrists or if you prefer an oversized aesthetic. Try both on if possible, as the square case wears differently than round watches.
Santos-Dumont vs Santos de Cartier — what's the difference?
The Santos de Cartier is a sportier watch with an integrated metal bracelet, 100m water resistance, and Cartier's QuickSwitch strap system. It uses an automatic movement. The Santos-Dumont is thinner, dressier, and comes on a leather strap with no bracelet option. It uses a quartz movement (large) or manual-wind movement (XL), has minimal water resistance, and costs significantly less. Choose the Santos de Cartier for daily wear and versatility, the Santos-Dumont for dress occasions.
How to spot a fake Cartier Santos?
Key authentication points for the Santos: the exposed screws on the bezel should be perfectly flush and evenly spaced — fakes often have raised or unevenly placed screws. The blue sword-shaped hands should be a deep, consistent blue (blued steel on mechanical, lacquered on some models). The crown should have a genuine blue sapphire cabochon or faceted stone. The QuickSwitch mechanism on authentic models operates smoothly with a small push-button on the bracelet lugs. Serial numbers are engraved on the caseback — check the format matches the reference number claimed in the listing.
