How to Use AuctionMapper

AuctionMapper adds features to eBay search that eBay doesn't offer. Here's how to use them.

Browse Without a Keyword

On eBay, you have to type something into the search bar before you see any results. AuctionMapper removes that requirement.

Click any category in the tree on the left side of the page to browse all items in that category — no search term needed. This is useful when you want to discover what's available without committing to a specific keyword.

For example, you can click into Sporting Goods > Equestrian > Saddles and browse everything listed, or open Toys > Diecast & Toy Vehicles to see what's new across the entire category.

The Dynamic Category Tree

When you type a search term, the category tree on the left automatically trims to show only categories that contain matching results. This reveals where items actually live in eBay's taxonomy.

Search "speedmaster" and the tree shows results in Wristwatches, but also in Parts & Accessories and Jewelry & Watches. Search "holley carburetor" and you'll see results spread across Carburetors, Intake Manifolds, and Air Filters — categories you might not have thought to check.

Click any branch to narrow your results to that specific category. The result count next to each category tells you how many items are there before you click.

Category-Specific Filters

When you select a category, the filter panel updates to show filters specific to that category. These filters come directly from eBay's API and change depending on what you're looking at.

Here are examples of what becomes available in different categories:

  • Watches:dial color, reference number, band material, water resistance, year manufactured
  • Auto Parts:CFM rating, number of barrels, fuel type, brand compatibility
  • Diecast Models:scale (1:18, 1:24, 1:64), vehicle type, era, manufacturer
  • Saddles:seat size, type (Western, English), material, brand

eBay's main search page does not surface these category-level filters. You would need to manually navigate deep into eBay's category structure to find them. AuctionMapper surfaces them automatically when you select a category.

Search Operators

AuctionMapper supports the same search operators as eBay, letting you write precise queries:

Exact phrase
"rolex submariner"— matches that exact phrase only
Exclude words
vintage guitar -broken— removes listings containing "broken"
OR search
(seiko, orient, tissot)— matches any of the listed terms
Combined
(vintage, antique) camera -digital— vintage or antique camera, excluding digital

For a complete reference, see the eBay search operators guide.

Total-Cost Sorting

eBay lets you sort by price or filter by free shipping, but it does not let you sort by the actual total cost (price + shipping).

AuctionMapper calculates the total for each listing and lets you sort by it. A $15 item with $8 shipping costs more than a $20 item with free shipping — total-cost sorting makes that obvious.

Select "Price + Shipping: Lowest First" from the sort dropdown to use this feature.

Distance Sorting

Enter your ZIP code in the location field, then sort by distance to find items closest to you.

This is useful for items where local pickup saves significant shipping costs — furniture, large auto parts, heavy equipment — or when you want to inspect something in person before buying.
