The American Silver Eagle in brief
The American Silver Eagle is the U.S. Mint's silver bullion coin, issued every year since 1986. Each coin contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and carries a face value of one dollar.
The front uses Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design. The original heraldic eagle on the reverse was replaced in mid-2021 by a new design of an eagle landing, so collectors speak of Type 1 and Type 2 coins from 2021.
Bullion, proof and burnished
Bullion Silver Eagles carry no mintmark and are sold through the Mint's authorized purchasers. Proof Silver Eagles have a mirror finish and a mintmark; burnished coins have a satin finish and a W mintmark from the West Point Mint.
Collectors also seek graded coins in the top grades, MS70 or PF70, and low-mintage years; 1996 has the lowest mintage of the bullion issues.
Before you bid
A bullion Silver Eagle is valued mainly for its silver, so compare the current bid plus shipping with what you would pay per ounce elsewhere. Many listings bundle several coins; this board leaves out listings whose titles say they are lots.
